Environmental Goals
& Accomplishments

Arapahoe Basin is proud of its environmental record. We strive to be a leader on the environmental front. The following information describes our most important environmental policies and practices, which A-Basin promises to make every effort to achieve and uphold in our daily operations.

Goals

  • Prepare and implement purchasing guidelines to reduce waste and minimize use of hazardous materials.
  • Complete energy audit and institute changes that will reduce energy consumption.
  • Improve compost and recycling programs, including beginning composting at Black Mountain Lodge.
  • Increase ridership of the free Summit Stage bus and encourage carpooling by providing incentives to our guests.
  • Increase environmental awareness of our guests and employees by providing accurate and useful information for them to become environmental stewards of Arapahoe Basin as well as their own communities.
  • Increase participation in the Arapahoe Basin Ski Area Employee Environmental Fund.
  • Continue to grow support for our local conservation center, High County Conservation Center, by implementing The Snow-Huggers Club.

Accomplishments

  • Offsets 100% of electricity use with wind power since February 2008.
  • Ski area wide recycling and small-scale vermicomposting programs.
  • Establishment of Employee Environmental Fund through payroll deductions to benefit local environmental organizations.
  • Implemented recycling and kitchen/employee composting program.
  • Offer reusable cups, dishes and silverware in the Legend's Café and Black Mountain Lodge.
  • Played an active role in developing NSAA's "Sustainable Slopes- The Environmental Charter for Ski Areas".
  • NSAA Silver Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence in Water Conservation, 2005.
  • NSAA Silver Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence in Visual Impacts for the Montezuma Bowl Expansion Project, 2008.
  • Voted #3 in Top Ten Green Ski Resorts - SkiNet.com April 2009.
  • Environmental Manager Sha Miklas awarded Essential Earthy Employee by the High Country Conservation Center April 2009
