2012 Race Results

 

The Grind is an uphill, downhill adventure race designed to introduce new participants to backcountry skiing as well as challenge the veteran skier. Races are modeled after European randonee events with competitors beginning on foot and running to clip into their skis. Athletes skin uphill on a challenging course and race down to the finish. Race category vertical is approximately 3,000 ft, recreational 2,000ft. 

 

Recreation Course: Begin in the base area and ascend up High Noon. Three quarters up the way of High Noon veer left across Sundance past TB Glades which will be on your left.  Head towards Treeline Terrain Park, go under the Norway chair lift and up Grizzly Road.  Ascend to the top of the Pallavicini chair lift. Move along ridgeline towards Snow Plume Refuge (patrol headquarters) at the summit. Continue up to the weather station at the top of Montezuma Bowl.  Take the traverse to the top of Zuma lift, descend down Humbug to Falcon/Dragon continuing down East Gully. Circle around the Avalauncher and follow the discs up a minor hill and then come down towards Sundance and back to High Noon to the base area, covering approximately 2,000 vertical feet.  Course is subject to change due to conditions. Race Course: This course will travel up High Noon following the recreation course as listed above.  It will take a second loop on the upper mountain from mid-mountain up to the summit and back down to the base area and the finish.  The course is a total of approximately 3,000 feet vertical.  Course is subject to change due to conditions. Below is a course map, simply "click" on the image to enlarge the photo.

 

 

Cost: Recreational - $25 registration fee

Race - $40 registration fee

 

Start Time: Race division will start at 8:30am, recreational will begin at 10:00am

 

How to Register: on the day of the event beginning at 7:00 a.m. in the A-Frame.

 

$2,000 worth of prize money

Prize Money: Race Division - Overall Male and Female - 1st Place $500; 2nd Place $250; 3rd Place $100

Rec Division - Overall Male and Female - 1st Place $150

Other prizes for first place in divisions and categories

 

Apres Ski Party: All competitors will be invited to attend the apres ski party in the base area after the race with a raffle and award ceremony. The Spyder Big Rig will be here with prizes and PBR and New Belguim will supply the beer.  Get a goody bag and an A-Basin spring event t-shirt! And a DJ from Kystal 93 will be spinning tunes.
