Alpenglow Ascents Rando Series (1 of 3)
Friday, March 21, 2014
Join us Friday afternoons for a 3-part series of up-hill and down-hill challenges
Come to Arapahoe Basin for a beautiful afternoon of skinning with our three-part randonee spring-time series. This NEW series will start and finish in the Base Area while summiting near 12,472'!
This event is much like our Rise n Shine series, except it’s in the afternoon. Perfect for the serious rando racers that are training for The Traverse or the Power of Four, or people who just want to get a solid skin in after work. We’ll have prizes for the top 3 male and female winners in each division, and we usually throw some fun random prizes in (for example: a prize for the person who comes in 23rd or a random prize “hidden” on the course). It’s a great time to hang out with your friends who participate in uphill travel, whether they be skiers or splitboarders, recreational athletes or elites. Everyone’s welcome at Alpenglow Ascents!
Don't forget to celebrate your skinning success in the new 6th Alley Bar after you finish!
Check in: Starting at 3:30 p.m. on the first floor of the A-Frame
Start: 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $20 for race only, $30 for race, post race appetizer buffet, and one beverage from the 6th Alley Bar and Grill
Divisions: male and female
New for Alpenglow Ascents:
Try It Course:
This course has one transition with less elevation gain and distance. Perfect for the recreational uphill traveler that wants to come out on the mountain for a fun afternoon, or for the first-timer who has heard their friends, family, and neighbors talk about uphill travel and wants to give it a go.
Try It Course details: Ascend up Wrangler through the lower loop of Chisolm Trail. Continue back on to Wrangler and up into the trees near the bottom of the East Wall. Continue uphill toward the bottom of the Lenawee Chair to Black Mountain Lodge via the Lenawee Traverse. Once at Black Mountain Lodge, descend down High Noon to finish on the Perch above the 6th Alley Bar and Grill. This course has an elevation gain of 700 vertical feet.
Long Course:This course will have multiple transitions and significant elevation gain throughout the mountain for the seasoned uphill traveler or the person that wants a bigger challenge.
Long Course details: Ascend up Wrangler through the lower loop of Chisolm Trail. Continue back on to Wrangler and up into the trees near the bottom of the East Wall. Continue past the lower East Wall Avalauncher Tower and up Half Moon Glades. Transition to a boot pack about half way up Half Moon Glades (a small backpack may make this easier) and boot pack to the Humbug Avalauncher and pick up a lei to wear for the rest of the race. Once “leied” descend down West Gully to Black Mountain Lodge. At Black Mountain Lodge transition and skin up Grizzly Road to the top of the Palavicini Chair Lift for another transition to descend down Slalom Slope, through moguls, to the descent down High Noon to finish on the Perch above the 6th Alley Bar and Grill. This course has an elevation gain of 1,830 vertical feet.
