Podcast Ep3: Building mountain bike trails at A-Basin

A destination-worthy mountain bike trail is coming to Arapahoe Basin. Ten miles of bike-optimized singletrack have been designed that will cross several of our terrain areas, provide stunning views, and offer up a high-alpine backcountry-style experience to those willing to earn their turns.

Last summer we opened part one: the 2-mile Wheels Up downhill trail that allows riders to pedal a 4-mile loop using Argentine North Fork to climb to mid-mountain. Next summer we will debut the premier segment of this trail: a 3-mile directional and bike-only loop through The Beavers and Pali terrain that will connect to Wheels Up for a 5-mile rip down the mountain (the podcast says 6 miles but we finally got out with a GPS and it's a bit shorter). Called "The Beavers Loop," this new trail has reached the halfway point in its construction thanks to the hard work of IMBA Trail Solutions and the A-Basin Trail Crew.

We brought our podcast -- Good Morning Arapahoe Basin! -- back from summer vacation to chat with the trail's main designer, Joey Klein (pictured above), about how the trail is being built, what it will be like to ride, and what the unique considerations are when working in a landscape like ours.

Joey is part of IMBA Trail Solutions and has 30 years of experience designing and building trails all over the globe. He is also an A-Basin regular and, way back in the day, was one of our resident night janitors for whom the ski run "Janitor's Only" is named.

Give it a listen and enjoy the photos below of a preview ride from our photographer, Ian Zinner.
